CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL 2022 – DAY 1

TUESDAY 15 MARCH 2022

Good Morning, welcome to go the greatest show on turf, Christmas for grown-ups, whatever you wish to call it, it is here, with crowds and what a meeting it promises to be.

The blog is back in earnest, after taking much of the National Hunt season off due to a new arrival, however, the plan is to offer guidance throughout the entirety of the Festival, into Aintree and into the Flat season, long-time readers will recall a very profitable Cheltenham last year, in excess of 100 points profit.

We will soon dive into Day 1, however, here are some of the multiples placed in advance of it all kicking off.

Supreme Novices Hurdle

The Prestbury Cup kicks off with Britain represented by Nicky Henderson and Constitution Hill and Jonbon and Ireland’s best chance according to the market, Dysart Dynamo. The Seven Barrows horses have not been in any sort of form of late and therefore, 9/4 is too skinny for Constitution Hill, throw in doubts over the Tolworth, going the other way and the fact he looks scoped to be a chaser and he is not a fancy for me.

Jonbon is on the drift however and is now looking very much like a play, hoping for 5/1 or bigger in the morning.

Willie Mullins wins the Supreme with Dysart Dynamo who will get out, set fractions and should have a few off the bridle turning in at odds of 5/2 the night before, he will be our main selection alongside, a further potential play on Kilcruit at 15/2 who finished second last year in the Champion Bumper.

Dysart Dynamo 9/4 double with Run Wild Fred – see end of post.

Kilcruit 8/1 1pt ew

Jonbon 5/1 (only backing if this or bigger in morning) 1pt ew (backed at

Arkle Chase

A very interesting renewal, will it be 2-0 to the Irish, perhaps even the Brits, or a score-draw at the conclusion of the Arkle. Edwardstone for Alan King has done nothing wrong this season, however the doubt may be over what he has beaten, I would disagree with this, however what he faces today via the emerald isle, will certainly test him to prove the neigh-sayers wrong. Many a better judge than I, have said Edwardstone is the best hope for the British in the big races and yet, I am keen to take him on. The price whilst drifting from the 2/1 late last week, would need to be closer to 4s/5s for me to be keen, hence two, from Ireland catch the eye.

Blue Lord and Riviere D‘etel the latter receiving the 7lbs mares allowance will be our selections, it would not surprise me to see one of these going off favourite, in particular if the Irish win the Supreme.

Blue Lord 9/2 2.5pt ew

Riviere D’etel 9/2 2.5pt ew

Ultima Handicap Chase

The first proper punting contest of the meeting, as 24 are due to line-up for the Ultima.

Teaclipper 12/1 1pt ew

Fantastikas 12/1 1pt ew

Ben Dundee 16/1 1pt ew

Gericault Roque 12/1 1pt ew

Champion Chase

Honeysuckle, Rachel Blackmore, Cheltenham, can the mare make it 15 times a winner? On paper, yes, on form, surely (although whisper it, some will say, what has she beaten…), however the price as a single is not too appealing, although she is on the drift and anything above evens becomes tempting.

Appreciate It, not seen since last winning the Supreme Novices Hurdle, will defy all the stats going if Willie can topple the Queen in this fashion, however, if anyone can, Willie can. The yard rate him very highly and he could literally be anything.

Teahupoo for Gordon Elliot, is our second selection, Elliot promises to have a very good Festival, having been without a licence last year due to his questionable antics, caught on camera.

Appreciate It 4/1 2.5pt ew

Teahupoo 10/1 1.5pt ew

Mares Hurdle

Stormy Ireland looks laid out for this one and at 5/1 is still a very back-able price, anything like her performance at Punchestown in early January and the race would be hers, the only concern would be if she goes off too hard from the off and does not have anything left going up the hill.

A held-up type will be our secondary selection, with the Lucy Wadham trained Martello Sky being a selection at a bigger price, Bryony Frost sits atop.

Stormy Ireland 5/1 2.5pt ew

Martello Sky 18/1 0.75pt ew

Boodles Handicap Hurdle

One to drop the pin on a few:

Forever William for Alan King, looks well in at the weights and has shown pace that should trouble these, in particular if the talking horses towards the top of the market struggle.

Skycutter and Sea Sessions are our further selections at equally ambitious prices.

Forever William 33/1 0.75pt ew

Sea Sessions 40/1 0.25pt ew

Skycutter 66/1 0.25pt ew

National Hunt Cup

A match race on paper between Stattler and Run Wild Fred, with the latter preferred due to the partnership with Jamie Codd and furthermore the campaign this season, plotted masterfully by Gordon Elliot, with this race always the plan.

Run Wild Fred is our main selection, we will also back the Elliot second string Braeside as he will no doubt have been working alongside the well fancied favourite in the O’leary silks.

Run Wild Fred 7/4 double with Dysart Dynamo see below.

Braeside 14/1 1pt ew

Multiples for Day 1:

Dysart Dynamo & Run Wild Fred 8/1 2.5pt ew
